Puerto Viejo and the Jaguar Rescue Center – Cute Overload

HappE: We took our first trip to the east side of the country, also known as the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean is over there too. Cool! Up until now we have only been on the Pacific side of the country so it was a great adventure to travel to the other side.  There was a really nice relaxed ‘island vibe’, Jamaican feel to the place.

Fiestas and the Beach surrounded by Jungle, who could ask for more 🙂

We stayed near Puerto Viejo in a small town called Playa Chiquita. It was at the very edge/tip of Costa Rica near the Panama border.

Playa Chiquita map

We rented a great little house with some new friends and brought our dog. The house was more of a Costa Rican style house that was mostly outside. It was great!! We got to basically hang out outdoors and slept in sealed bedrooms, it was perfect. Especially when it rained, we got to be in our outside in a covered living room.

We enjoyed some time in the beautiful tropical ocean. There was some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen and we only saw a few that trip.
Looking forward to going back beach exploring.

One thing we had planned on our trip was the Jaguar Rescue Center. I have been excited about his for months, I have heard only great things. We took a private tour where it was just the guide, Us and the animals. I highly recommend, it was great. We got to be up close with the animals and got to ask a ton of questions.

Meet Stanly the Kinkajou.
I love Stanly. I am dieing from cuteness!

Baby Kinkajou….

We were greeted by a baby Anteater. Funny little creatures.

They have a loooong skinny tongue as long as their beak. Crazy!

That dark fur on his body is covering his sharp quills underneath.

Monkey time!!!
Monkeys need a lot of space to be happy healthy monkeys. It is pretty amazing what the Jaguar Rescue Center does with the monkeys that have been rescued. During the day they let these misfit rescue monkeys out into the jungle to do monkey things. They get to play in primary rainforest open and free to play and do monkey things. But most of these monkeys can not live on their own and are not ready to leave so they come back to a caged habitat to eat and sleep each night.

We got to feed them! About 15 monkeys (Spider, Howler and 1 capuchin) all jumped and climbed all over us while we fed them. They just came back from the jungle and were very hungry.

The momma of the rescue. The monkeys loved her so much.

Take a breath, the cuteness is NOT over.

Later that day, a local told us about a HOT RIVER! Yes, that’s right, a natural flowing hot river, with natural hot spring pools and HOT waterfalls. I have never seen or felt anything like it. One of the coolest places on earth. (and free)

We went downstream and found a private steaming waterfall. I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t planning on going in, I had no bathing suit and expected to just watch…. But after seeing how amazing this was, I stripped off my clothes and went in. PURA VIDA!

This place was Jungle Magic!

Monkeys and the Beach!

We went to Manuel Antonio National park and had a very close encounter with a Capuchin family. So cool!

Monkey peeking

puchin face at us

puchin grabinThis little Capuchin was happily eating her fruit while we took pictures. Then she drop it right in front of me, I could of touched her!!
I had my camera and filmed it.

After she was unable to find it and went back up in the trees, I found the little fruit she was looking for. I picked it up an placed it high in a crack in the tree. She happily came and got it and the pictures continued.

Then we saw the cutest thing we have ever seen. One monkey laid down putting it’s belly on a branch just letting it’s feet dangle. Then a second monkey came face to face, and did the same thing, arms and feet dangling.
Then IT HAPPENED!!! They held hands…… and started kissing SQUEEEEEE!!!
The pictures came out blurry but worth it. OMG the cutest thing to see in nature.

After watching these cute little monkeys, a third monkey came and did weird monkey acrobatics.
Fun to watch.

Then we were at the beach.
We were at Marina Bellena aka The Whale’s Tail. This is where on low tide, you can walk out very far to sea on a part of beach shaped like a whales tail.
It was pretty amazing to have ocean on both sides of us. The jungle comes right up to the ocean with amazing clouds. So beautiful.

Cute couple and beautiful Sunset.

And THIS is where Pineapples come from!

Hacienda Baru – Manuel Antonio

First we stopped at Manuel Antonio beach. Our dog had one of the best days of his life running in and out of the streams of water.
We found a nice spot to sit and watch the crabs.

We walked up one of the streams leading to the ocean and found a Jesus-Lizard
(that’s what they call them here)

Above this lizard we spotted a small family of Howler monkeys. So cool!

Then went to Hacienda Baru. A national reserve that was formally a pasture for cattle where they grew tall grass and rice. The farmer had a change of heart through his experiences in Costa Rica and wanted to return the land back to it’s original form. They have restored the land the last 30 years by planting trees and letting the jungle take over. Now there are more monkeys than animals in this area, thanks to an old farmer.
We explored the land….

We saw one of the biggest Waterfalls EVER!!

We went to a very small town called Los Chorros (not churros… delicious little cinnamon stick) where we heard of a waterfall, so we went to explore.
Off in the jungle we go.into the Jungle we go

We hiked down this beautiful trail to the river below where a lovely waterfall stood.

Jungle green

It was wonderful. The water was clear and cool. The waterfall calmly falling over the rocks below.

First waterfall

Shortly after we were admiring this waterfall, a family told us about another waterfall upstream…. a bigger, more amazing waterfall. They were very insistent we go. We looked around and saw no sign, trail or way. They pointed at the river and told us to go through the water towards the canyons, so that is what we did.

No wonder why we didn’t see a sign, or trail…. Bridge out, lol
Los Chorros waterfall bridge (8)
We went around this bend upstream and it was beautiful! Everything was damp, ferns grew on rocks and water was coming OUT of rocks. So magnificent!
Water coming out of rocks

And upstream we continued….

water coming out of rocks (2)

Soon after wading upstream, the air got loud, the rocks grew dense and we were getting wet from the mist in the air. We were going towards something huge…
We walked to one of the biggest most powerful waterfalls we have ever seen. It was creating a cyclone like effect through the rocks pushing massive amounts of water through these canyons. It was amazing!! So powerful and lucky to be alive.
Giant Waterfall

Looking UP!!!

Waterfall canyon

Whew!!! That was intense!
On our way back we strolled calmly through the stream.
We enjoyed a beautiful rainbow of leaves under the water.

Stop to enjoy beauty, find a butterfly nearly drowning in the river….. perfect poem.
And a butterfly has been saved.

And turn back to see a rainbow under the waterfall. What a wonderful way to end the journey.

Pollo the Turtle

Why did the chicken cross the road? Because he was a turtle! Meet Pollo (‘Chicken’ in Spanish).
A friend found this turtle crossing a dangerous road so he gave him to us (he knew we loved animals). After some research, we realized he was a water turtle (Red Slider). So we found him a nice river in the neighborhood where he can be a happy turtle.

Our trip to Playa Hermosa

HappE: Fun trip to the beach with great company. The water was warm, clean and the jungle came right up to the beach in some spots. The sand was black, spotted with shells and seeds that have traveled here. We played in the water and got our a$$ kicked by huge waves. It was so much fun.
And we saw SCARLET MACAWS over the beach!!! Um, YES please!!!

Our trip to Montezuma

HappE: My friend Krystal and I took a trip to Montezuma. The trip was long and amazing. Very ‘Indiana Jones.” It took us about 7 hours to get there with many obstacles  along the way. We went through mainly dirt roads, went through rivers, past farms, cows, ox, detours, got lost in the most amazing locations. and took the LONG way around.
The journey makes most of a trip and this was quite the journey.

We found these Amazing Ginormous Beanstalk looking-like-things to start our journey.

We were stopped by a family of cow on the MAIN ROAD. Yes, everyone must drive through/past them to continue on the road.

YES!!!! YES! A REAL OX pulled cart!!!
OMG these things were HUGE. The biggest hoofed creature I have every seen.

This Costa Rican beauty was wonderful. She packs up her ‘motorcycle’ with a table and all her crafts to sell by the beach. Her motorcycle has little pockets on it and her crafts made with love. She brings her little hammer and leather to make art along her way.
She matches this amazing ‘Costa Rican women’ character I imagined. She is perfect.

costa rican beauty———————————————————

This guy had climbed up a coconut (or palm tree) barefoot with a machete and was hacking at the leaves. These guys are Hardcore. I even saw guys fishing with just a rope AND one guy was fishing with a NET. Straight up ‘Lost’ style.

We were told by the locals that we can NOT leave until we see the infamous Waterfall (or two). So we stayed another day for another adventure. We weren’t ready for a big hike that day so we wore our flip flops to the river. We had no idea what was in store for us that day. We started our day in rocks taking pictures of the river and trees it was beautiful.

Tree waterfall

An older Costa Rican scrambled up the rocks barefoot through the river passing us. Krystal had mentioned he seemed like a Medicine Man. A few pictures later, I looked up and noticed the medicine man was calling us over. “Um, Krystal, it is time to go, the medicine man is calling and our train is leaving”

There we were, all of a sudden, following the barefoot medicine man through the jungle. We also had another couple join us as well. We were all very unequipped for a jungle trek and all of us took off our flip flops to follow this barefoot man. Yes, BAREFOOT! We all did it together, he took care of us the whole way and hardly spoke any english.

Tree money shot

Through the mud, over tree roots, rocks, used a rope to scale rocks, tip toed over some hills until we came across THEE Waterfall. OMG,  this was a powerful body of water.

This was our crazy Medicine Man doing a SWAN DIVE in the waterfall. Silly

On one of the detours, aka getting lost, aka led by magic….. we stopped to hear the HOWLER MONKEYS. They were so loud. They were right above us in the trees. As we were recording the sounds, we had noticed more MAGIC. Hundreds of butterflies on a rock and flying around. It was so beautiful, magical and full of fairy life. Never seen or heard anything like it.

Hands down one of the most beautiful butterflies I’ve ever seen.
