Sustainable Off-Grid Mountain Retreat with Vast Ocean Views

Immersed in nature, with all its grandeur and splendor, this world-renowned homestead is perfect for naturalists, artists, mystics, and equestrians. It is also unique due to its cool mountains climate and close proximity to tropical beaches.

In the coastal range above Uvita, this inspiring and unique round ecolodge overlooks the famous Whale’s Tail coastline and a massive biological corridor stretches from the rainforests of the Osa Peninsula to Manuel Antonio and connects to several other national parks and ecological reserves. This corridor is home to many endangered and endemic species such as scarlet macaws, ocelots, jaguars, and squirrel monkeys.

The lodge is a large, two-story, elegant earthen home, hand built by the owners in 1991 (the first modern sustainable home in Costa Rica) on top of a steep escarpment 1,000 meters above sea level. It is off the grid with solar power and natural spring water, and off the beaten path, surrounded by tropical forests and cascading rivers, just twenty-five kilometers south of San Isidro.

They also created a large organic garden with fruit trees and founded a local alternative school, where they teach seminars on regenerative living practices, such as reforestation, gardening, natural building, horse care, and a range of arts, crafts, and holistic movement classes. They are skilled in carpentry and cabinet making, seamstressing, and prepare world-class food, specializing in a variety of Latin American, Spanish, and Mediterranean dishes with vegan and vegetarian options. Their main objective is twofold: to simplify their way of life by practicing regenerative activities, and to minimize their impact on the planet. They believe that true wealth is not about how much you have but how little you need.

The house has five bedrooms, each with a double bed and two singles. With two people in each of the double beds, the house can accommodate up to 20 guests. Each bedroom has a private bathroom with hot shower and a terrace with garden views. Towels, soap, and other essentials are provided. The house is a non-smoking environment and is not suitable for small children or pets. Common areas include a dining room, large living room with a fireplace, a spacious geodesic dome room upstairs for yoga classes, and a nice outdoor patio. Your guests are sure to appreciate the vast ocean views to the West, and to the East, the towering Talamanca mountain range featuring the highest peak in Costa Rica, Mount Chirripo.

This is a wonderful place to observe natural flora and fauna, especially for bird watching, as the property is on a mountain pass that connects the ocean lowlands to the fertile inland valleys. The many trails nearby allow for extensive hiking, horseback riding, and access to an array of waterfalls and natural swimming holes just a half hour hike from the house. There is also a regular swimming pool at the nearby restaurant.

The closest beach, Marino Ballena National Park, is home to an array of dolphins and migrating humpback whales, just 12 kilometers from the house via rural road passable by foot, bike, horseback, or strong 4x4 vehicle. The main access road is paved most of the way and well graveled for the last five kilometers. It’s about a four hour drive from San Jose.

The owners also breed, raise, and train (without pain, the natural way) their own thoroughbred horses, a cross between Andalusian and Paso Fino. If anyone in your group doesn’t know how to ride but would like to, they also offer riding lessons.

Whether your group is looking to simply reconnect with nature in one of the most spectacular places in Costa Rica, or to actively engage in regenerative living practices, this venue is an excellent place to host your event.

What people are saying:

This is a perfect spot for those who treasure nature and like to follow the rhythms of the sunrise and sunset. If you preserve a bit of the energy for the evening (having done hiking, horseback riding, swimming in waterfalls, or at the beach during the day), you will enjoy the warmth of the fireplace, stimulating conversations, and perfectly star filled skies spreading over the luscious greens of the jungle.”

“This place is a dream. Clouds sweep across the mountains and whirl around the property, and once cleared by the refreshing breeze, you can see a perfect view of the ocean. Andalusian horses grace the pastures and provide a fairy-tale like ambience to already pristine surroundings. They will fill your head with wisdom and stories, and delight you with delicious cooking and warm presence. They treated me like family and it was the perfect welcome into Costa Rica, being the first place that I stayed. I would especially recommend this place if you want to learn about living a sustainable lifestyle. They're doing it right for sure, and the home is exquisitely designed.”

“At this special place I found peace, adventure, art, health, time that lasts to do a lot of things, close contact with nature, delicious and nutritious meals, good company and conversation, the magic light of candles, and the joy of living sustainably off the grid, not just talk about it. Every time I go back I learn a lot of things there. I'm very proud the hosts are the guardians of this knowledge and that they share it with others. In a good sense, they are the keepers of the best of the old ways, the treasure we look for, but adapted to the future. Thank you!”

“The experience was wonderful and unforgettable. A very charming house with great hosts. They enjoy talking about their experiences and to teach others about how we can create a better world. They cook amazing! Her food was really tasty, fresh and delicious, with ingredients harvested in the zone and a natural feeling that you can only taste in a place like this. Be prepared! Hiking shoes and swimming shorts for the waterfalls, a good sweater to go outside in the night to see the stars and a good camera to take some shots to the wonderful sunrise and sunset.“
